NS Drill has constantly changed throughout the years, and with new head coach, Julie Reese, the changes have become more prominent.
“It's just a lot stricter, but we are running it better and we’re learning better,” senior Paisley Koop said.” “We are getting better.”
They even brought back things that haven't been done on NS drill for years.
“We have been able to present the flag, and that's something we haven’t done at North Sanpete for [almost] the past decade,” Reese said.
Reese has a lot of resources for the girls. Reese’s sister is a drill coach for South Sevier. Her sister has also won state and region several years in a row as a high school coach. They had her come in and work with the team. It was extremely beneficial for them.
“She’s the head coach of South Sevier drill team and they’ve won State for the last like 5 years in a row,” Koop said.
The girls are happy with all of their routines. They have only performed at football games, and though there isn’t a lot of stress, it’s a fun experience. With competition season it can be more stressful.
“[We perform] just on Friday night. Lights are just honestly the best, and it’s not as serious,”senior Kylee Farley said.
The team is even more excited to perform so they can show that they can compete against other schools. In years past, they haven’t scored as high in region and state, so they believe that they are able to be serious competition this year. Although they are not sure that they will win, they do think that this year is a huge building block for the team and for the program.
“I think that we have definitely stepped it up this year,” junior Brylee White said.
Although the girls are excited and looking forward to competing, Reese believes that their biggest competition is themselves. She really wants the girls to see how amazing they are and how far they have really come.
“To me we’re competing against ourselves to be the best of the best. We want to be the best version that we can be,” Reese said.
Overall the girls are looking forward to competing and improving. Their ultimate goal is to place higher than they did last year and make it to the second day of state. The second day in state is a lot harder to make it to. It is only based on their performances the day before. Not how they were placed in the region.
“Last year we placed higher than we did the year before, and we’re already doing better,” Farley said.
