NS makes changes to school layout and library.

After eight months of construction, the new front office at NS was completed last March. This caused many different changes to the school this summer, and has affected 15 faculty and staff members.

The main changes are that the old office moved into the new front office; the counseling center moved into the old office; and Hawks online is now in the old counseling center. Several other staff members have also found new homes.

People have different opinions, but the majority like the change.

“Is there a bigger word than love?” librarian Kandy Beebe said.

The librarians love the change, because for the first time in ten years, the library is just a library. No online classes, and a lot more silence. While they love this, they miss the social aspect of seeing everyone.

"It's nice to just have a place where kids can have quiet and where it's not a classroom setting,” librarian Jenny Cox said. “Because I think that was the hardest part with having class in the library just wasn't a real library.”

Both Cox and Beebe appreciate how quiet the library finally is.

“Students have a place where they can study,” Cox said, “where they can read, where they can do their homework, and it's not as noisy as it once was.”

Because Hawks online moved to the old counseling center, they now have fewer disruptions, which helps the students in Hawks online succeed better.

“I don't get to see as many people,” Hawks Online teacher Debbie Miller said, “but I really enjoy being in [the new Hawks online classroom] because it keeps it very quiet and [the students] work harder.”

While some of the faculty love the silence, vice principal Bryan Holder thinks the silence is unsettling.

“It's easy to get lost in [the new front office] because it is quieter,” Holder said. “Whereas in the front office, you could hear everything, and this is away from all that.”

As Miller mentioned, even though most of the staff likes the change, many miss the social aspect. They miss seeing all the students and getting to interact with them.

Some in the new counseling center - the old front office - miss some of the benefits of the former space.

“I loved being able to greet students in the morning,” Becky Rees said. “For me, my job really is more about the connection with students and helping with supporting them in whatever way.”

Two others affected by the change are our school resource office, who moved into the old supply room, and the school nurse, who moved into    Officer McQuivey’s old office. That move gives NS a sick bed for the first time in many years.
